Clicker Training A Wild Horse [2]

Phantom Touches Me
Now I had to move in and out trying to get her to both be curious about me and to touch me. Oh, she wasn't too worried about finally touching me. But if I even thought about lifting a hand, she'd scoot rapidly away! The "intended" rope halter is looped in my belt. When she touched me a few times, I "Clicked" and slowly walked away. This signalled that her response was my only desire at that moment. We did this several times, from many directions. I was conditioning Phantom to understand the "Click" concept.
Attempting to touch Phantom
What about touching Phantom?? Well, you knew at the outset that this would be very difficult. I'd raise a hand and try and guess the point before she began to turn and leave. When I got this right, I'd "Click" and slowly walk away. Early on, Phantom had shown me her "Preferred" side and I made good use of the "Offer". Soon enough, she was also showing me a "Preferred" point on her face where I "Might" be allowed to make contact. I built from there .......
It may look as if I went too far and she's leaving. However, I noticed she thought that touching her neck might be :OK". I saw her feet were still in-place, so I rubbed her neck one time and Clicked , then began to reach for the "Treats", in the bag on my belt. She'd not tasted them yet and now was a good time to let their smell drift from my hand to her sensitive nose.
I'd had the halter in my hand but she'd not really seen it. Now I needed to let her see it and work it closer to her face and ears. So I'd "Present" it and if she didn't move too much, I'd Click. Still wasn't interested in the grain, but she'd muzzled it before. Here, I'm reaching for it again. I'll, again., slowly move my right hand around to her and allow Phantom to move her nose towards it, if she wants to. Note her slightly flaired nostrils.
