How to get her to let me up so close that I can manhandle the knots on the ropes; tug on the rope halter; gain her trust; remove the drag line without startling her ?? "Hello little horsie, it's all right" , the words Becky Tipton once said as four of us played Mustang Poker to get a fresh mustang to put her own halter on ...

Charles, a Blackfoot Native American,  adopted two mustangs in May. One he was riding after two months.  The other, this little Filly, had already been adopted out twice!! So this is the third adoption she was at. If she was not adopted, she would be euthanized under the new, what I call,  lack of interest in mustangs, BLM Policy. Thus, Sister-in-Law Brenda and Cherokee,  adopted Mystery.  Mystery ended up with about 25 feet of mud encrusted 'Drag-Line'. However, despite Charles' best attempts over two months, getting into a round-pen with her was seemingly impossible as she wanted to protect herself. Charles, a former LRRP for the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, called me. Hey, that's what we Vets do, help one another .. I flew attack helicopters in Vietnam.. so I asked him to bring her over and we'd play "WHW Workshop' like we did in the days when the BLM actually cared about the Mustang as a horse from the wild.  Follow along and see what two intensive days can do for gentling a fearful mustang if you think outside the box. For all you team members, we wish we could have had Charles go everywhere with us on previous forays to the WHW clinics. We;d have double our success rate! ... and learned a lot about Blackfoot Culture too. Shapeshifters welcomed!

After a long and hard ride we walk back to the horse barn.

BLACKJACK: "Ahhhh, thankfully, my chariot is still there ... take me home for a shower, Boss!"

In order to make things go faster, I needed Mystery to sign on to 'Clicker Training'. Thus, It would be perfect if I could give her a morsel of some delectable treat if she went along with my scheme to gentle her. At first I used ha fistful of hay and let her grab "some" out of it after I'd click .. then I hide it form her so she is working for the CLICK and not the dang food ... somebody remember this ... it's not the food, it's the CLICK,  the "I Win" , in her mind.  So here's Charles holding a little feed-pan with some grain ..  I am using a Fly-Spray bottle of Wipe-II as a grooming tool ... many of you remember how many objects we have made into pleasing grooming tools .

When I walked into the roundpen with my "Carrot Stick",  Mystery exploded. I could see the beating marks on her left side, the rope burns form previous adoptions .. guess I couldn't carry anything with me ...Hmmmm ... yeah, but my sharp knife would not penetrate the seemingly cemented 3/4 line.  I also had no success using Charles sharp 6 inch Buck knife ... Mystery stood while I schmoozed with her. It took a while ... she'd go "walk-About", but I expected this. Just re-acquire her and get back to it. 'Think outside the box'. So got the idea suddenly that,  in a normal situation,  I'd just get the huge 'Bolt Cutters' .. heck, this is,  for me, a "Normal' situation, so I yelled for the Bolt Cutters ! Fancy that !

At THAT point, it became easy to advance the speed-of-learning for Mystery.  We now see Charles making some rasping moves on the hoof of Mystery. A few days ago,  no one could get up to her inside a round-pen. Don't get me wrong, she liked them all, she was so afraid that she could not lower her guard, that's all.

And then it would be nice if we could dispose of the awkward Feed-Pan and just dish out the rewards from our hand ... takes some time and finesse to do it. Mystery figured it out. .. Patience !

... Bonnie serves as a temporary Oak Tree.

... 'c'mon Bob ... Charles "steadies" Mystery while I rasp ... she did stand still, with no other person there .. however, she would move off on 'walkabout' . I knew we had but two days, thus I used the Oak-Tree anchor concept so Mystery could quickly see that good people working on her hooves was no big deal and she could "Win" at this game also! (Click/Treat).

...She wanted to wear my UNLV hat in order to earn a Click .. that's how eager she's become in a few hours. And, she is accepting two of working up close with her ... cool!

.. the little 5 year old Filly was eager to learn more and told us so!!! Hey, why not walk around with the saddle blanket? She's looking good, body-condition wise.  Charles has put about a hundred pounds back on her frame by good care and good feeding. She's destined for a great life now!!! She's figured out that there is a common language between horse and man and it's Clicker! My thanks again to Alexandra Kurland for teaching this stuff to me a long time ago.

Charles begins a grooming session and I am on the other side giving her neck-rubs ... Mystery is loving all this as you can see by her neck twists ...

Bagari  an Ovcharka Livestock Guardian DOg, wanted to inspect the new addition to her fold. Trouble is that Mystery, being off the range, has learned form childhood that canines are a serious threat to the Band and they must be stomped out. So I am trying to introduce the two to one another. Bagari has done this many times. Mystery lowered her guard enough to accept the truce ... and maybe she will understand some canines can be fine while others not so much.

Oh yeah, this is better than be afraid of humans ...

.. Leg Brushing ... seems to be working .. Mystery seems calm enough.

A few minutes later and Charles leads his friendly young filly onto the trailer and heads back to North Carolina. I wish every adopter was so dedicated ... drive 8 hours to solve a mustang gentling problem .. Willis (KBR), Vickie and I salute your dedication .. and here's a solved 3rd time adopted horse who will live out a happy life despite the first two adopters who beat the diminutive, gentle, filly. Lucky the Blackfoot "Little People" came to the rescue!

Yup,  totally hooked on grooming and Clicker  ... yup, yup .. now brush the back legs ...
