Anatomy of a Wild Horse Poker Game
There are many ways to actually gentle a Wild Mustang. However, sometimes the Mustang himself offers such a strong desire to stay away from us, that we need to do what I call "Think Out Of The Box" and invent some news ways.

While at I.R.A.M. in South Dakota, I had such a mare, Phantom. Long poles, short poles, ropes, "Advance &Retreat" and Clicker Training did not get me within ten feet of her. However, Phantom was very curious about everything. So much so that she would walk up behind me and sniff all about me. Yet, if I even thought of approaching her, she would fly away. Thus came the game of Poker.

In the pictures to follow, you will see Willis Lamm (of L.R.T.C.) and I set up various situations where the young Mustang will have an option to do something then be rewarded by a CLICK" sound and thus a small treat of Hay. I "Target" trained the Mustang by Clicking whenever he touched (sniffed) the card table. Mustangs are smart and this fellow caught right on. Note also, that many of these Mustangs prefer to occasionally do a small "Walkabout". That is, do not try and expect them to stand still, near you, while at liberty in the round pen. They NEED to move around to re-explore the place and rid themselves of the claustrophobic feeling they get. By NOT constraining them as such, they do the learning on their own time and perhaps feel the learning is their idea.

The Players
Willis on the Left. I am on the right. Unsure who is in the middle. Becky Tipton will be joining us at the table. We are goofing around and definitely NOT thinking about, nor focusing on, the Mustang about to walk up to this bizarre sight!
Thanks to Rhonda, of Groves Long Ears & Pack Oregon, for all these nice pictures.
He checks out Willis
First he walks around the pen. Then he decides to check out Willis.
Checks me out too!
Then he walks around and leans in. Maybe he wonders why I am giggling so much!
Hummm This looks Yummy!!!
He says, "Hey, this looks Yummy!!"
Yeah, I can eat that
Oh No!!! Not my "Charlie One Horse" hat!!!
